The paintings Australians keep ordering

Why these sell

Best sellers share one trait: they read clearly from across the room

The paintings people order again and again all have strong shapes and high contrast, which is what makes a wall work from six metres away.

Look at what tops the list and a pattern shows up. Big simple masses, a clear focal point, two or three dominant colours. Fussy, evenly detailed paintings photograph well online but go flat on a real wall, because at normal viewing distance the detail dissolves into grey. Hand-painted oils help here too: the raised paint catches side light, so the picture changes through the day instead of sitting there.

Measure your wall before you choose a size. A painting should cover roughly two-thirds the width of the sofa or bed below it, and the centre of the canvas belongs at about 145cm from the floor, not up near the cornice. Over a sofa, leave 20 to 25cm of clear wall above the back cushions. Pull one colour from the painting into a cushion or throw and stop there; matching everything kills it.
