Line art lives or dies on the empty space around it

Line work looks detailed at arm's length and behaves very differently from four metres away. A hairline stroke that reads beautifully on a screen can thin out to almost nothing on a large canvas across a room. Before you choose a size, step back from the product image on your phone and see whether the line still holds. Heavier, more gestural strokes scale up well; fine, feathery ones are better kept modest.

Go one size larger than instinct and leave real breathing room — line art crowded by furniture or other frames loses the quiet that makes it work. Hang a single piece with its centre around 145cm from the floor, or run two or three in a row with identical 8 to 10cm gaps. Skip patterned walls. And avoid hanging warm-white canvases on a bright white wall, where the background disappears and the drawing floats oddly.
