About Harbour Sails at Daybreak
A wide harbour scene reads across the canvas in soft greys and creams. Two small boats with rust-red hulls sit in the right foreground, their reflections broken into short horizontal strokes on pale water. Behind them a cluster of yachts crowds together, masts and rigging drawn as thin vertical lines, sails blocked in white, ochre and muted teal. A single taller sail stands apart at left centre, its canvas warm beige against grey. Further back, smaller white sails scatter towards a faint skyline of buildings dissolving into mist.
The paint is laid on with a knife in places, leaving ridges along the sails and choppy water, while the sky is thinned and scraped to a hazy wash. The mood is quiet and early, more atmosphere than detail, with the red hulls carrying all the colour weight.
Suits a long wall above a sofa, sideboard or bedhead where the horizontal format has room to run. The warm grey palette works with linen, oak and pale plaster walls in coastal or Hamptons-style rooms, and the rust-red hulls pick up terracotta cushions, leather chairs or copper lamps.
