About Golden Palms at Midnight
Two palm trees stand in flat gold against a near-black ground that warms to deep brown at the edges. The larger palm sits left of centre, its crown filling the top third with long fronds that arch outward and split into fine spikes, the trunk running down as a thin double line to the bottom edge. A second, smaller palm rises at the right, its crown a rounder fan with shorter fronds, trunk curving away to the lower right corner.
The paint is laid flat with no modelling, so the trees read as cut silhouettes; a lighter patch of gold near the right crown breaks the evenness and shows the brush. The character is graphic and quiet, more poster than landscape, with the contrast of gold on black doing all the work.
Works in a dark-walled dining room, a hallway with brass or timber fittings, or a bedroom above a low bedhead. The flat gold picks up warm lamplight and sits well with black joinery, rattan, linen in cream or charcoal, and tropical planting. Hang alone rather than in a group.
