About Gilded Zebra Gaze
A zebra's head fills the canvas at close range, cropped so the muzzle runs off the lower left edge and the ear and shoulder push past the top and right. Every stripe is painted in warm metallic gold against deep black, the bands narrowing over the bridge of the nose and fanning out across the cheek. The dark eye sits just above centre, ringed by short curved stripes that draw the focus in. At the lower right, coarse gold flicks suggest the bristled crest of the mane.
There is no background: a second striped body sits behind the head so the whole surface becomes a pattern of gold and black. Paint is laid on thickly in places, leaving ridges along the edges of the stripes that catch the light and give the gold a leafed, slightly uneven sheen. The character is graphic and bold, closer to a design motif than a wildlife study, yet the softly painted eye keeps a sense of the living animal.
Works well on a dark or charcoal feature wall in a living room, or above a sideboard in a hallway where the gold picks up lamplight. Pairs with black timber, brass fittings, cream linen and leather.
