About Gentle Bay with Blaze
A dark bay horse fills the canvas at close range, head turned slightly towards the viewer and lowered so the muzzle sits near the bottom edge. A narrow cream blaze runs from between the ears down the face and widens over the nose, catching the only strong light in the picture. The background is almost solid black, with faint brown warmth behind the neck. A brown leather halter crosses the cheek and jaw, fastened with a square metal buckle, and a steel snap and chain hang below the chin.
Soft blended brushwork models the cheekbone, nostril and the moist dark eye, while thin highlights pick out the halter stitching and the polished links. The mood is quiet and still, closer to a studied animal portrait than an action piece, with the strong dark-to-light contrast doing all the work.
Suits a hallway, study or dining room with pale walls, where the black background reads as depth rather than a hole. Works above a dark timber sideboard or leather chair, and sits well with equestrian photographs, brass lamps and tan leather. In country and stable-themed homes it anchors a wall on its own.
