About Abandonment
A long corridor recedes to a small lit doorway at the far end, drawing the eye through a series of shallow arches. The walls are painted a faded teal that has blistered and flaked away in wide patches, exposing grey render and, near the left windows, a band of rust-red brick. Tall casement windows on the left stand open, their frames buckled, throwing cold daylight across a sill thick with plaster dust. On the right a tall pale double door, crazed with cracked paint, sits shut in its frame.
A single wooden chair with a plain slatted back stands alone in the middle of the patterned tile floor, surrounded by fallen debris. Brushwork is tight and controlled, with the flaking paint built up in small dry strokes so the wall surfaces read as genuinely rough. The painting is quiet and still, and the lone chair gives it a sense of a room recently and permanently left.
Suits a hallway, study or entry where the receding corridor can be seen straight on and read as depth. The teal and rust tones work with grey concrete, dark timber and black steel-framed furniture. Good above a low console or sideboard, and strong enough to hang on its own without other artwork nearby. Browse more all hand-painted oil paintings, How to care for an oil painting.
