About Abundant Garden
The canvas is filled edge to edge with large star-shaped flowers, each built from five to seven pointed petals in scarlet that warms to orange where the light catches. Every bloom carries a cluster of small lime-yellow stamens at its centre, painted in short raised dabs. Between the flowers sit broad green leaves, some bright and glossy, others sunk into near-black shadow, with two upright stems running up the right-hand side. There is no sky or horizon, only the packed mass of petals and foliage.
The brushwork is loose and wet-looking, with long curved strokes following the length of each petal and ridges of paint left standing along the folds. It reads as a close-up garden bed in full bloom, bold and high-contrast rather than delicate.
The dark background and strong red suit a neutral wall in a dining room, entry or hallway, where a single square works on its own. It sits well with white or grey walls, timber furniture and black metal fittings, and lifts a kitchen or living room that has little other colour.
