About Alluring Bud
A single magnolia-like bloom sits inside an oval window at the centre of the canvas, edged with a row of small raised white beads. Inside the oval the background shifts from deep blue at the top to pale, almost white blue at the base, like sky behind glass. The flower has two heads: an upright bud with pointed scarlet-tipped petals and an open cream-yellow blossom streaked with orange, carried on a dark stem with two broad green leaves.
Around the oval the surface is built up in thick ochre and burnt orange, scratched and combed with fine swirling lines. A violet wedge in the top left and a dark brown panel at lower right carry raised lattice and scroll patterns pressed into the paint. The character is decorative and tactile, part still life and part ornamental panel, with the bright flower held quietly at its centre.
Suits a warm entry hall, a dining room with timber furniture, or a bedroom wall above a chest of drawers. The ochre and burnt orange sit well with terracotta tiles, rattan, brass lamps and cream linen, while the violet and blue picks up indigo cushions or a patterned rug.
