A still lake fills the lower half of the frame and repeats the scene above it almost exactly. A line of bare, dark trees stands along the far shore, with a thin band of white fog lying low across the water and the base of the trunks.
Behind the trees, a blue-grey ridge of forested hills rises under a heavy sky. Clouds along the top and left glow orange and yellow from the rising sun, and the same warm patches sit in the water at the bottom. The colours are soft and cool in the middle, warm at the edges. It is a photograph with a calm, symmetrical composition.
