A great horned owl is shown in tight side profile, facing right, filling almost the whole portrait frame. The eye is the focal point: a round amber iris with a black pupil and a small highlight, set inside a dark ring of feathers and a pale white brow above it.
The detail is built from fine layered strokes, like coloured pencil on tinted paper. Feathers run in rust, cream, grey and dark brown bars, with a pointed ear tuft rising at the top and a second tuft behind it. The hooked beak is slate grey with a pale edge, set against a soft, mottled grey-brown background. A small signature sits in the bottom right corner.
