About Anchor
A line of wooden fishing boats sits low in the water across the foreground, hulls overlapping so the masts form a loose row of thin verticals against the sky. The tallest boat carries a rust-red sail flecked with orange and gold; next to it a cream-white sail catches the light, and a third pale hull with a small red cabin roof sits further right. The water below is worked in short horizontal strokes of navy, teal and white, broken by ragged red and yellow reflections. A dark green band marks the horizon under a blue and white sky.
The paint is laid on thickly with a knife, so ridges of colour stand off the canvas and the reflections read as broken bands rather than mirror images. The effect is a busy, weather-worn mooring caught in strong light.
Suits a living room or dining room with white or grey walls, and works well in coastal and Hamptons-style rooms. The deep navy water anchors a sofa in linen or pale timber furniture, while the red sail picks up cushions, rugs or a timber sideboard. Also good above a hallway console or in a study.
