A black and white photograph looks up a cobblestone street in Brooklyn toward the Manhattan Bridge. The stone tower and its steel cross-bracing fill the upper two thirds of the frame, with the bridge deck running across it in a band of trusses and railings. Fine vertical suspension cables hang down the top of the image like pale threads.
Dark brick buildings close in on both sides, leaving the pointed arch of the tower as a bright opening. Through it the Empire State Building stands small and lit against a cloudy dusk sky. Street lamps glow along the road, and a few parked cars and one-way signs sit in the shadowed foreground. Contrast is deep, with heavy blacks and soft grey sky.
