A thick beech trunk fills the left of the frame, its bark mottled grey-green with pale lichen and a knot near the top. Buttressed roots spread over the ground and disappear into a dense carpet of scarlet and rust leaves that runs across the whole lower third. A slim sapling rises beside the trunk, its thin branches still carrying clusters of small red leaves. Behind it, straight grey trunks fade into cool mist, with warm light leaking in from the upper right corner.

The photograph is quiet and slightly surreal: the red is turned up while the background stays desaturated and foggy, so the leaf litter and the few remaining leaves glow against a silver-grey woodland. A single bleached stick lies in the leaves at the base, adding a small pale accent.
