A stand of autumn trees fills the upper two thirds of the scene, with a tall maple at right and a golden birch at upper left. Leaves are built from thick, short strokes of orange, amber, red and yellow, so the foliage looks textured and almost sculpted. Two small birds sit high in the blue sky.
In the foreground, pale blue and cream grasses lean across the lower left, streaked with gold. A dark pond at lower right holds reflections of red and orange and scattered fallen leaves. A strip of bright green grass runs behind the water, which makes the warm trees stand out. The look is an impasto-style painting with visible knife marks.
