About Awesome Lilies
Three calla lilies stand across the upper half of the canvas, each trumpet turned slightly differently so the group reads as a loose row rather than a rigid line. The petals are painted in warm gold with raised, slightly gritty texture that catches light along the folded edges, and each carries a thin upright spadix. Long stems in olive and bronze drop through the lower half, joined by three furled buds and blade-like leaves that overlap at the base of the picture.
The background is built from vertical panels of crimson, brick and deep maroon, some meeting at slight angles so the red appears pleated behind the flowers. The overall character is bold and graphic, with the metallic gold sitting hard against hot red for a decorative, almost lacquered effect.
Works in a dining room above a sideboard, an entry hall, or a lounge with dark timber and black leather. The gold reads well against white, charcoal or warm grey walls, and picks up brass lamps, candle holders and amber glass. A strong single statement piece for a square wall.
