About Awesome Lilies II
Three calla lilies fill the upper half of the square canvas, each trumpet turned slightly differently so the flared lips overlap and break the edge of the frame at right. The blooms are painted in golden yellow and warm ochre with thick raised paint, so the curled petal edges and the central spadix catch light in relief. Long olive-brown stems drop straight to the bottom edge, joined by three furled leaves painted in bronze and grey-green. Behind them the background is built from vertical bands of denim blue, slate and pale cream, mottled like washed paper.
Its character comes from the contrast of hot yellow against cool blue stripes, held steady by the vertical rhythm of stems and bands. Quiet and graphic rather than pretty, with enough surface texture to read as paint from across a room.
Works in a bedroom above a low chest, in a hallway, or in a bathroom where the blue bands echo tiles or stone. Pairs with pale timber, linen bedding and brass or aged gold fittings.
