A single leafless oak fills most of this square photograph. A thick, dark trunk rises from the bottom centre and divides into a wide web of branches. The limbs reach out to both edges, and the finest twigs break into delicate, lace-like patterns against the sky.
The tone is sepia, with a soft gradient from warm grey-brown at the top to a bright, near-white glow at the horizon. Behind the tree sits a low, wooded hill, and dry grass in dark shadow runs along the bottom edge. The tree is a near silhouette, so the branch shapes stand out sharply.
