Four butterflies are spread across a cream, aged-paper background, each marked with a small number from 1 to 4. Two have deep blue wings edged in black, one at top left and one at lower left, with green shading near the body and small orange flecks on the lower edges. A pale butterfly with black spots sits at right.
The fourth butterfly, at the bottom right, has green wings with brown and cream bands and tapered tails. Fine black line drawings of leaves, stems and a small flower sprig run behind them, while faint handwriting shows through the paper. A two-line Latin caption sits along the bottom edge, in the style of a vintage natural history plate.
