About Blue Elegance
Three tall bottle-shaped vases stand in a row across the lower two thirds of the canvas, set against a flat navy blue ground that darkens towards the corners. The outer two vases are aubergine brown, banded with rough cream stripes that sit in the paint like scratched chalk; the centre vase is olive brown with a vertical grain and two pale dots on its body. From each narrow neck rises a single thin black stem carrying an open orange bloom with loose, petal-like strokes. A small dark leaf spray sits beside the right stem.
Texture does the work here: dry, scraped paint on the vases and thick orange dabs on the flowers stand out against the smooth blue field. Quiet and graphic, with warm colour used sparingly.
Works above a sideboard, hallway console or in a dining room where the navy can anchor a pale wall. Pairs with warm timber, brass lamps, cream or oatmeal upholstery and terracotta pottery. In a bedroom it sits well over a low bedhead; the portrait shape also suits a narrow wall between doorways. Browse more the Statton Collection, all hand-painted oil paintings.
