Five large peonies fill the upper two thirds of this portrait image, their heads crowded together and cropped by the edges. The petals are built from thick, flat strokes of cream, white and pale blush, with the paint ridged and streaked where a broad blade has dragged across the surface.
Coral and deep pink show at the centres of the lower and middle blooms, and small leaves in olive green sit between the flowers. Below them the background turns to a pale grey-green wash, with vertical drips and dragged streaks running down the lower half, leaving open, quiet space under the bouquet.
