About Botswana Patterns

A single elephant stands in profile, cropped so its head, ear and shoulder fill most of the square. The animal's silhouette is made up of dozens of small square tiles, each carrying a different motif: crosshatching, stars, stacked chevrons, spirals, dots, flowers and woven basket lines. These tiles run through indigo, navy, teal and slate blue, with white line work drawn over the top. A pale curved tusk sweeps forward from the trunk, and a second tusk edges in at the right.

The background is a flat, scuffed field of warm grey and beige with fine scratched marks and mottled staining, like weathered concrete or plaster. Colour is limited: cool blues against neutral grey, with cream for the tusks and drawn outlines. The effect is graphic and calm, part textile sampler and part animal portrait, with enough surface wear to stop the pattern reading as purely decorative.

Works in a living room above a low sideboard, in a home office, or in a child's or teen bedroom where a single strong image is enough.
