About Fierce
A young girl fills the centre of the canvas against a plain pale grey ground, painted almost entirely in black, white and soft greys. Her hair is shaved close at the sides and gathered into a tall dark topknot, the scalp shading from near-white highlights to deep charcoal. She looks straight out with lowered brows, full lips closed, the expression level and unsmiling. Small hooped earrings with beaded ends hang at each ear, catching a thin line of light.
Around her neck sit many tight rows of black beads flecked with white, stacked high like a collar and sloping across her collarbones. A pale wrapped cloth covers one shoulder, knotted with a patterned dark band on the left, while the right shoulder is bare. The paint is smooth and tightly blended, with no visible brush texture; detail is carried by fine tonal gradation. Its character is quiet and direct, a still portrait that holds eye contact rather than asking for attention.
Suits a hallway, entry or bedroom wall where a single face can be met at eye level. The grey and ivory palette works with white or limewashed walls, black timber frames, rattan and linen.
