About Paris Cafe Corner
A cobbled laneway curves across the lower half of the canvas, its grey stones laid in pale bands that catch light from the left. A tall iron lamp post stands in the foreground, leaning slightly, with a stone stair climbing behind it. Along the row of buildings sit a blue-fronted shop with window boxes of red and pink flowers, a small cafe with a red and white striped awning and the word CAFES on its glass, and an arched iron gate under a yellow Galerie sign.
Above the cafe, a large orange poster painted onto the wall shows a dancing figure in a wide skirt and red hat, framed by blue louvred shutters and trailing green vine. Brushwork is thick in the flowers, awning and stonework, with ridges of paint catching the light, while the walls are laid in flatter creams and greys. The mood is quiet and mid-morning, a street scene with no figures in it.
Suits a kitchen, dining nook or hallway where a square format fits neatly above a sideboard or bench. The red awning and flowers lift grey or cream walls, and it works with timber furniture, cafe-style chairs, bistro glassware and other small European street scenes in a group.
