A white candelabra stands at the centre of a square composition, its tall stem and base rendered in a rough, chalky texture. Seven slim candles rise from its arms, the middle one tallest, and each has a pointed flame-less tip. The edges of the white shapes look worn and speckled, like a stencil or screen print.
Heavy black damask scrollwork fills the whole frame and crosses in front of the candelabra, with curling acanthus leaves, small tendrils and teardrop foliage. Behind it all sits a flat mid-grey background. With only black, white and grey in play, the effect is graphic and gothic, close to a faded wallpaper or a theatre set.
