A plump male cardinal fills the middle of this watercolour, its body built from layers of crimson, scarlet and soft purple with touches of orange near the wing. The pointed crest tips upward, and a black mask surrounds a bright orange beak. The tail stretches out to the left, and thin dark legs and feet rest on the ground.
Behind the bird, a deep green wash with mottled blue patches forms the background, scattered with white spatter that reads as falling snow. Below, the ground is cream paper left bare in places, with loose patches of ochre, olive and grey-blue and a few dark grass strokes. The colours bleed softly into one another, and the paper's white shows through the snow.
