About Cellar Door
Two wine bottles stand on a bare timber table against a dark brown background. The bottle at left is dark green with a torn cream label and a foil-wrapped neck; the taller bottle at right has a burgundy capsule and a pale label set on an angle across the glass. In front of them sit two stemmed glasses filled with pale golden white wine, and between them lies an old corkscrew with a wooden handle. A small signature sits in the lower right corner.
The table top is built from long strokes of yellow, ochre and orange laid side by side so the grain of the boards shows, and hard-edged shadows fall to the right of each bottle. The paint is smooth on the glassware, where thin highlights run down the stems and bowls, and rougher across the timber. The character is quiet and warm, a domestic corner caught in low lamplight.
Suits a dining room wall, a butler's pantry or the space above a sideboard or wine rack. The golden tabletop and dark background work with oak and walnut furniture, brass fittings and warm white or olive walls. It also fits restaurant and cellar-door interiors, hung near timber shelving or a bar counter. Browse more all hand-painted oil paintings, How to care for an oil painting.
