A single butterfly with open wings sits in the centre of a dark brown, cracked and mottled background. It is rendered in chalky white and soft grey, as if drawn in white ink on aged paper. The forewings carry broad pale bands and a cluster of white patches near the tips.
Heavy dark veins run through the hindwings and fan outward to a border of small white spots. Two thin antennae reach upward from the body. A thin dotted white line frames the page, and below the butterfly a handwritten-style caption reads "fig. 2 Danaus genutia". The tones stay within brown, grey and white.
