A tall white chef's toque floats in the upper part of the portrait frame, shown straight on against a solid black background. The pleats run in soft vertical lines, with the crown slightly wider than the band. The shading moves from cream to pale ivory, with faint greenish and amber edges.
Beneath the hat, the single word CUISINE is set in tall, elegant capitals in a muted gold-cream tone. The letters are slim, with fine serifs and slightly uneven edges that give a painterly, illustrated feel. The black ground is flat and deep, so the hat and lettering carry all the contrast. A tiny signature sits at the right edge of the hat band.
