About Red Spiral Duet
Two large spiral forms sit on a diagonal across the square canvas, one entering from the upper right, the other from the lower left. Each is built from a heavy band of crimson that coils around a soft grey and charcoal centre, the inner ovals shaded from pale mauve to near black. Fine black and red line work loops around the outer edges like unravelling thread, with a few red drips running down the pale ground between them.
The background is worked in broad horizontal strokes of grey, white and warm cream, scraped and combed so the knife marks and ridges of paint stay visible. A patch of silver-white impasto sits inside the lower spiral's dark core. The overall character is bold and graphic, with the two red coils giving the painting a strong sense of movement across a quiet, weathered surface.
