Four children share a patterned beach towel in the shade of a big cream parasol. One girl lies on her side in the foreground, head propped on her hand, while a girl in a green striped swimsuit sits behind her. Two more children sit to the right, one in a blue and white sun visor.
Thick, visible brushstrokes give the sand and towel a rippling surface of lilac, pink, peach and pale yellow. Sunlight glows through the parasol canopy, whose spokes fan out above the group, and warm skin tones stand out against the cool blue-grey ground. It reads as an oil-style painting with a loose, impressionist feel.
