Two steep rock faces form a V-shaped gap in the middle of the image, and the eye is drawn through it to a wide, pale sea. The cliffs are warm sandy beige and grey-brown, with smooth, slanting planes lit from the side. Dark green conifers grow in the gap and along the right ridge.
The left foreground slopes down in tussock grass that shifts from deep green to yellow and burnt orange, with a few red touches near the bottom corner. Across the water a brown headland and a hazy grey-blue ridge fade into mist. The sea is milky white and silver, with faint lines of surf near the far rocks. The finish reads as a realistic painted landscape with soft, muted light.
