About Kissing Under the Rain
A single crimson umbrella sits at the centre of the composition, tilted over two figures who stand close together on a wet street. Both are painted in near-black with only the suggestion of coats and legs; a pale cream shape hangs at their side, reading as a bag or coat tail. Behind them a city skyline is blocked in with soft greys and warm off-whites, a tower shape rising slightly right of centre. Four smaller dark figures walk in the middle distance.
The foreground is worked in long vertical strokes that pull the reflections down the canvas, so the pavement looks slick and running with water. Paint is thin and dragged, with edges left soft and unfinished. The umbrella is the only strong colour in the picture, and it carries the whole painting.
Suits a bedroom, entry hall or living room with grey, white or oatmeal walls, where the single red accent can be picked up in a cushion or throw. Works beside linen bedding, oak or black-framed mirrors, and other city scenes. The tall portrait shape fits a narrow wall or a space above a hall console.
