About Venice Lagoon Light
The waterfront of Venice is seen from across open water. A tall brick campanile with a green spire stands slightly left of centre, flanked by pale cream buildings with low red roofs. To its right sits a long two-storey palace washed in terracotta and rust over a paler arcade, ending in a small arched bridge at the far right. A large ochre lateen sail leans in at the left edge, with gondolas and dark figures strung along the quay and a small white sail out on the water.
The sky is worked in thick slate-blue, mauve and cream strokes that break into light behind the tower. Water below is laid down in short horizontal palette-knife marks of teal, olive and pearl grey, with broken reflections under the buildings and a green-topped gondola nosing in at bottom right. The character is quiet and atmospheric rather than sunny, a city seen through soft weather.
Suits a dining room, hallway or living room where the slate blues and terracottas can sit against white, grey or soft stone walls. Works well above a sideboard or a long lounge, and pairs with timber furniture, linen upholstery, brass lamps and other European waterfront or harbour scenes.
