About David and Queen Sheba
Two faces fill the canvas and are painted to look carved from stone. At the upper left a figure with thick curling hair tilts forward, eyes lowered, the profile picked out in pale cream against warm copper. Below and to the right a second face turns upward with closed eyes, hair drawn back in soft waves. A slender hand rises between them, fingers together, its knuckles catching the lightest paint on the canvas. The background is flat troweled plaster in rust and grey, scratched and mottled.
The paint is laid on thickly and scraped back, so the surface itself reads as weathered stone rather than smooth portraiture. The mood is quiet and inward, closer to a fragment of carved wall than a conventional figure painting.
Suits a hallway, entry or bedroom where a single warm-toned piece can sit alone on a plain wall. The copper and rust tones work with terracotta tiles, timber furniture, linen and leather. Good above a sideboard or a bedhead in rooms with lamplight rather than harsh downlights, which brings out the raised texture.
