About Dawn Three
A wide boulevard runs from the lower edge into the distance, drawing the eye to a pale domed building on the horizon. Tall apartment blocks with shuttered windows and balcony rails close in on both sides, their awnings and shopfronts blocked in with a knife. A couple walks away from the viewer at centre, the man in a hat, the woman carrying a bag, with smaller figures and a cart scattered along the far pavement. A bare tree and a street lamp break the left edge.
The entire painting is worked in black, charcoal, grey and off-white, with thick ridges of paint catching light across the sky and the damp roadway. Its character is quiet and atmospheric rather than busy, a grey city morning held still.
