A dappled bay horse charges straight towards the viewer across bare sand, its front left leg lifted and the hoof flashing pale at the base. The coat runs from deep chestnut brown on the neck to lighter grey-brown dapples across the hindquarters, with a small white star on the forehead. The black mane streams back in wild strands.
Behind the horse, heavy blue-grey storm clouds break open to a bright cream patch of sky, giving strong contrast against the warm coat. Fine dust rises from the hooves and drifts across the lower right, softening the horizon. The sandy ground is grainy and sharp in the foreground. It is a photograph with a square composition and a dramatic, moody light.
