About Eiffel Tower at Night

The Eiffel Tower is photographed from directly beneath its south-east leg, so the iron lattice sweeps up from the lower corners and converges on the spire near the top of the frame. Floodlights wash the structure in warm gold and amber, picking out every rivet, arch and cross-brace, while the undersides of the girders fall away into brown and near-black shadow. Behind it the sky runs from deep teal at the upper left to bruised blue-grey, with wispy cloud lit gold along one edge and a thin aircraft trail crossing the left side.

The extreme upward angle gives the photograph a soaring, slightly vertiginous feel, with the warm lit ironwork set hard against a cold, stormy sky. Fine detail in the lattice and the soft cloud texture keep the image sharp without losing its moody atmosphere.
