A black and white photograph taken from street level, looking steeply up the Empire State Building in New York. The limestone tower rises through the centre of the frame in stepped setbacks, its vertical piers and rows of small windows narrowing toward the spire at the top.
The sky is filled with scattered clouds in dark and pale streaks, giving strong contrast against the bright facade. Dark building edges cut into the corners, and a small flag hangs from the wall at mid-height. The tonal range runs from deep black to clean white, with crisp detail in the stonework.
