About En Pointe
A single ballerina fills the upper half of this portrait-format canvas, bent deeply forward so her head and shoulders drop towards her outstretched leg. The tutu is built from wide magenta and hot pink sweeps that fan out to the left and right, with cooler blue and violet strokes tucked beneath the skirt. Her back and arm are modelled in warm ochre, brown and black, while the pointed foot at lower centre is drawn in one long tapering stroke. The lower third is left as open white ground with a few thin drips.
Fast, loaded brushwork and a near-empty background make the pose read as pure movement rather than portraiture. The painting's character is energetic and stripped back, with colour doing the work.
Suits a bedroom, dressing room or hallway where the white background can breathe against pale walls. Works well above a dresser or in a dance space, paired with soft greys, blush textiles and pale timber.
