About Facets of Life II
Three narrow cypress-like trees stand in a field broken into flat bands of colour. One tall tree sits left of centre in a deep rust-red band; two smaller trees stand further back where mustard meets pale cream. Each tree throws a long, hard-edged shadow running to the lower right, and those shadows become wide wedges of burnt orange that cut across the stripes. A thin white line and a grey band close the top edge as a distant horizon.
The paint is thinly scrubbed and lightly mottled, so the ochres show a dry, chalky grain rather than gloss. The trees carry more body, with olive and gold strokes worked into their tapered shapes. It is a quiet, geometric painting where shadow does most of the work.
Suits a dining room, hallway or bedroom with warm white, clay or limewash walls. The rust and ochre bands sit well with oak or walnut furniture, rattan, linen and terracotta pots. Hang it above a low sideboard or bedhead where the long horizontal shadows have room to read across the wall. Browse more landscape oil paintings, the Statton Collection, brown and earthy art.
