About Violet Iris Bouquet
A square watercolour of Dutch irises arranged in a clear glass vase. The blooms fan out across the top two thirds of the image in deep violet, blue-purple and magenta, each flower marked with a bright yellow signal on the falls. Long, blade-like leaves and buds shoot outward in olive and yellow-green, some drawn in with fine dark lines. The background behind the bouquet is a wash of ochre and mustard that fades to bare white paper at the lower right corner.
The vase is suggested with a few vertical strokes and pale green shadows rather than hard outlines, and the stems show through the glass. Flecks and spatters of teal and dark green scatter across the right side, and pigment has pooled and bled at the petal edges, leaving soft granulated halos. A signature sits in pencil-fine script near the lower right. The character is quick and fluid, with colour allowed to run and mix on wet paper.
Suits a bedroom above a bed head, a living room wall beside a linen sofa, or a home office where colour is needed without heaviness. The purples and yellow-greens work with white walls, pale oak, rattan and greenery. Hang it as a single square over a console or sideboard, or pair it with a second floral square.
