About Fisherman's Boat One
A dark-hulled fishing boat sits bow-on in still water, its two tall sails raised and catching light. The sails are built from thick slabs of amber, ochre and rust laid on with a palette knife, the ridges of paint left standing so the cloth looks creased and sun-worn. Fine dark lines of rigging run from the masts down to the deck. The hull is near-black with a chalky white gunwale, and small flecks of red and yellow mark clutter along the deck.
Behind the boat a low skyline of pale buildings runs across the canvas, with two grey domes and a campanile to the right. The sky is a soft green-grey, scraped in broad horizontal strokes. Water below is worked in short blocks of lilac, sage and white, broken by the boat's dark reflection. The mood is quiet and weathered rather than picturesque, with all the energy held in the heavy paint of the sails.
Suits a hallway, dining room or bedroom with white or grey-green walls, where the amber sails can carry the warmth. Works alongside timber furniture, linen upholstery and brass or aged-bronze fittings. The portrait shape fits narrow wall panels, a stairwell landing, or the space above a sideboard or console table.
