Four horses stand side by side on open grassland and look straight at the camera. From left to right there is a chestnut with a pale mane and white blaze, a white horse, a black horse with a small white star, and a dark brown horse with a broad white blaze and a long black mane blowing to one side.
The ground is short green and tan grass with bare patches, and low scrubby hills run along a flat horizon. Heavy blue-grey clouds fill the upper half with a few lighter breaks. The light is soft and even, the focus is sharp on the horses' faces and legs, and the photograph has a natural, documentary feel.
