Three dark horses charge across a snowfield in this black and white photograph. The nearest horse is caught mid-stride, mane streaming back and tail swinging, with white blazes on its face. A second horse runs on the left with its head turned, and a third dark shape fills the right edge.
Powder snow sprays up around their legs and hangs in the air as a pale haze, softening the lower half of the frame. Behind them, tall pines fade into mist, leaving a grey backdrop that lets the glossy dark coats stand out. The tones run from deep charcoal to bright white.
