Two weathered stone gargoyles dominate the left half of this black and white photograph. A bird-headed figure with an open beak sits in the foreground, while a crouching horned creature rests its chin on one hand beside it, both carved into a rough stone parapet.
Beyond them Paris spreads out under a heavy, cloudy sky. Cream-toned apartment blocks line a wide road beside the Seine, a stone bridge crosses the water, and the Eiffel Tower rises small and sharp on the horizon. Tiny figures cross the pale paved square at lower right.
