A grey horse is shown from the head and neck, its head lowered and turned back over its shoulder. The dark forelock falls across the face and one eye, and the two ears point up at the top of the frame. A white blaze runs down the nose to a pink-orange muzzle, with a dark nostril drawn in firm lines.
The watercolour is loose and wet. Blue, teal and grey washes pool and bleed across the face and neck, and rust-orange and brown mark the mane and the shadow beneath the jaw. Fine dark pencil-like lines trace the ears and strands of mane. The background is bare cream paper, so the horse seems to fade into the white at its edges.
