A single seagull fills the right half of the frame, wings raised high as it lifts off the sand. Its feathers are grey and cream, with a warm tan edge on the lower wing, and its orange legs trail beneath the body. The bird sits slightly right of centre, with the beak turned towards the left.
Low-tide sand stretches out in fine, wavy ripples that hold thin pools of water, shifting from pale blue-grey on the left to deep gold at the bottom. Heavy purple-grey clouds crowd the sky, with the sun breaking through in pale patches and a band of orange glow along the horizon. It reads as a photograph with soft, blended colour.
