A single humpback whale fills the middle of a pale, off-white ground, seen side-on and angled slightly downward. The head sits at the left and the tail flukes curl up at the right. The body is washed in layers of slate blue, grey and teal, with a touch of olive-green on the back and above the eye.
The pale underside is marked with fine pleat lines and soft grey shading, while loose pencil outlines trace the edges of the body. Two long pectoral fins hang below, fading from deep blue to white at the tips. Scattered blue ink splatters and droplets float around the whale, heavier at lower left and lower right, which gives the painting a loose, sketchbook feel.
