A dense crowd of bearded irises fills the whole portrait frame. Lilac, lavender and soft violet petals overlap one another, with deeper purple falls and pale blue-white standards. Each flower has a bright yellow and orange beard at the throat, which gives the cool palette its warm points.
Behind the blooms, slim green and olive leaves and stems cross in loose vertical strokes, and the background darkens to deep green at the top. The watercolour washes bleed softly, leaving pale gaps of white paper and pooled pigment along the petal edges. A small signature sits in the lower right corner.
